Our Community

In the philanthropic spirit of the Kirkpatrick family, Kirkpatrick Bank has an active record of community support. Annually, the bank supports over 25 different organizations with sponsorships or donations. Officers, directors and members of our Admiral’s Club may make an annual request for support for worthy non-profits. Additionally, Kirkpatrick Bank provides support for schools for unfunded or underfunded programs. We seek to support efforts which promote access for the underserved in the areas of education, the arts, health and environmental responsibility. We encourage a spirit of volunteerism and community service among our employees, who annually provide approximately 1,500 hours of personal time to support various causes and organizations.

Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region was founded in 1949 as a private, non-profit organization with the mission to prevent animal cruelty and neglect. The Humane Society rescues and cares for animals in distress, reunites lots pets with their owners, finds loving homes for homeless animals and provides education to people in the proper care and respect for animals. They also enforce licensing and other animal ordinances. Approximately 23,000 animals pass through their doors each year.

The work of the Humane Society is supported by many generous individuals and organizations, as well as through its contracts and fees. Kirkpatrick Bank is one of many corporate citizens who support the Humane Society’s annual fundraiser, an iconic event in the community. Their work builds from a strategic plan focused on making Colorado Springs a community where animals are inherently valued by all members of the community, not just pet owners. As the enforcement agency for community ordinances addressing animal welfare, the Humane Society uses a blend of education to promote willing compliance and peaceful co-existence, with direct intervention or rescue on behalf of the animals and prosecution of cases against neglectful or cruel caretakers. Officers respond to over 29,000 such calls per year.

City Arts Center

City Arts Center offers progressive and innovative art exhibits year-round in the Eleanor Kirkpatrick Gallery with free admission to the public. The Circle Gallery exhibits artists who utilize experimental and new media, which create multi-sensory installation exhibits.

The Bridge Gallery offers exhibit space for community artists and groups to exhibit their work. A variety of classes and workshops for adults and children are offered six days a week in the arts of painting, pottery, weaving and more.

Throughout the year, City Arts Center enriches the lives of tens of thousands of people, young and old, from budding artists to seasoned creators, many of whom might not otherwise receive this exposure. The Midnight Streak is one of two major fundraisers which support City Arts Center. Kirkpatrick Bank is the presenting sponsor for this very unique race, which is held in the late evening each year in July. Bank employees volunteer to staff the race and many participate as runners.

Fine Arts Institute of Edmond

Founded in 1985 by four mothers concerned about the lack of opportunity to experience art in elementary grades, Fine Arts Institute (FAI) offers educational enrichment for adults and children in the visual and performing arts. Each year, some 3,000 students enroll in FAI classes and programs.

In 1985, the intrepid foursome began by teaching art and music in one classroom at and Edmond church. They kept art supplies in the trunks of their cars and took enrollment from an answering machine at the home of one founder. Nancy Effron, June McCoy, Gae Rees and Bonnie Smith were the volunteer staff, program coordinators and teachers in that first year and served 90 students.

Today, FAI has its own building, a 23-member board of directors, a 10-member youth board, three full time staff, 60 volunteers and a faculty of 23 artists. They offer year-round programs, monthly gallery exhibits and quarterly events to raise fun and funds. FAI partners with the City of Edmond Juvenile Court to offer an arts-based delinquency prevention program; the Edmond Public Schools and Edmond Women’s Club to offer art programs in the schools; as well as Peppers Ranch to provide weekly art therapy.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo was founded on its current site in 1926 by philanthropist Spencer Penrose. Built to house his growing collection of exotic animals, Penrose completed substantial development of the zoo as a prelude to incorporating it as a non-profit public trust for the people of Colorado Springs. In 1937, Penrose added the Will Rogers Shrine to the Sun and the purchase of a carousel from the Chicago World’s Fair.

Today the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is home to over 700 animals representing about 190 species on 146 beautiful acres, situated at an elevation of 6,800 feet. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo strives to mirror the natural habitats that animals would experience in the wild, including such exotic settings as the African Rift Valley, Australia or the Asian Highlands, following a comprehensive strategic and long-range plan established in 1989 for the continued development and enhancement of habitats and exhibits.

The zoo’s mission includes a commitment to leadership in conservation, animal care and captive breeding and education.

Small Business Development Center

Historically, economic recovery and expansion has been led by entrepreneurs and small businesses, especially in Oklahoma. Kirkpatrick Bank is a commercial bank whose expertise aligns with businesses like these. So, it made sense to partner with UCO’s Small Business Development Center, recently recognized as one of the top 10 such centers in the country.

UCO’s OSBDC offers comprehensive how-to courses designed to aid the successful launch or expansion of a business, including information on business planning basics, marketing, taxes and accounting, technology and financing. The center hosted a special business innovation conference in 2010 and offers a library of resources, success stories and more.

As a community partner, Kirkpatrick Bank provides educational support and is committed to participating in loan development. Visit the Small Business Development Center website.

Green Box Arts Festival

The Green Box Arts Festival was officially founded in 2009 to provide artists and visitors with an opportunity to nurture the creative process and explore new artistic directions in the natural beauty of Green Mountain Falls, Colorado. The foundation for the festival was laid in 2006 with the sponsorship by Christian Kirkpatrick Keesee of a dance residency program by New York’s Keigwin + Company, under the leadership of company founder Larry Keigwin.

Keigwin + Company has returned to Green Mountain Falls every year since. Their summer residency provides a unique opportunity to create work that is performed around the country in their regular performing season. As the residency program progressed from year to year, an interest in diversifying and expanding activities quickly grew in the community. This interest culminated in the official formation of the Green Box Arts Festival. The festival seeks to celebrate the best of today’s innovative creators. Partnerships with the Pikes Peak Library District, Town of Green Mountain Falls and Church in the Wildwood make the full range of activities possible. The festival today has grown to represent one of the area’s most respected artistic events and a draw for visitors to the area.

The Kirkpatrick family history and affection for the Pikes Peak area dates back to the 1900s. Members of the family have been in continuous residence there since that time. Throughout, they have been active supporters of the community and the development of its cultural environment.

Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center

The center incorporates amazing facilities for both the visual and performing arts. Founded in 1936 by visionary Alice Blemis Taylor, the original facility was designed by John Gaw Meems to house the Taylor Museum of Art and the Bemis School of Art, which had been operating as the Broadmoor Art Academy since 1919. The current expanded facility (design by David Owen Tryba) offers nine permanent collection exhibition galleries, two travelling exhibition galleries and a tactile gallery. The Bemis School of Art is a year-round art education facility offering programs to all ages and capabilities. Courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, art history and photography are but a few of the opportunities available. In addition to the museum and the school, the Fine Arts Center is also home to the award winning Fine Arts Center Theatre, which produces an annual season of musicals, comedies, and dramas, as well as offering film festivals and productions in music and dance.
